D-Day for Rooney: United's wantaway star looks glum as he holds crunch showdown with Moyes over whether he stays or quits

Wayne Rooney held showdown talks with new boss David Moyes about his future at Manchester United on Wednesday morning.

The 27-year-old didn't look overly pleased as he drove into United's training base in his Range Rover at around 9.30am for the first day of pre-season training.
He met with manager Moyes to discuss his future after a breakdown in communications with Sir Alex Ferguson last season. Rooney eventually left Carrington at 12.45pm

Rooney's United team-mate Rio Ferdinand seemed to be more excited to be back in pre-season training, tweeting: '1st day back for pre season today....1st day on the road to success this season.... #believe'.
Rooney is due to fly to Asia and Australia with the rest of the United team later this week for a pre-season tour.
The England forward is due to have his fitness assessment at Carrington this afternoon when the rest of the first-team players also report back after the summer break.

Rooney is said to be approaching the talks with Moyes positively and is keen to start afresh with the new manager after his relationship with Ferguson soured last season, culminating in the former manager saying the player had asked to leave the club.
Rooney's camp have denied this and the former Everton star is keen for the club to make it public that he never submitted an official transfer request, something Rooney feels could ruin his relationship with fans at Old Trafford, especially given the scenes when he asked for a move in 2011.
But Moyes will want to ensure that, if Rooney does not buy into his plans, they can come up with an exit strategy that avoids the acrimony that marred the end of their relationship at Goodison Park.

MURRAY MANIA

While Wayne Rooney and David Moyes prepared for their meeting in Carrington, former manager Sir Alex Ferguson headed south to SW19.
Ferguson was invited into Centre Court's coveted Royal Box to cheer on fellow Scot Andy Murray in his quarter-final tie against Fernando Verdasco.
Joining the former Manchester United manager at Wimbledon on Wednesday were England boss Roy Hodgson, actor Sean Connery and England rugby coach Stuart Lancaster.
Arsenal and Chelsea both have a concrete interest in luring Rooney south this summer but if United accept he is to be sold, they would be reluctant to let the forward join one of their domestic competitors.
As Rooney would be costly to replace, United would also look to attract a bid of around £35m. Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid could afford that kind of figure and the latter would  certainly be a club of interest to Rooney.
Real manager Carlo Ancelotti is a fan, but a concern for Rooney is the Italian’s pursuit of targets such as Liverpool’s Luis Suarez and Napoli’s Edinson Cavani.
Arsenal are willing to break their transfer record and make Rooney their best paid player but a package of around £170,000 per week would still represent a hefty decrease on his current £225,000-per-week deal. Moyes will need to assess the situation quickly if he is to find a suitable replacement.
