Rooney's next outing will be at the Etihad on Sunday when United visit neighbours and Premier League title rivals Manchester City.
And, with Rooney scoring three goals in two games, it is no wonder Robin van Persie is enjoying their partnership after Moyes decided to pair them together as forwards. “I love to play alongside Wayne,” said the Dutchman. “He has a bit of everything.”
Boss Moyes wants the duo to be deadly this season, and they could make United’s attack as feared as it was when Rooney lined up alongside Cristiano Ronaldo.
“It’s different,” added Rooney, who shared goal totals of 60 and 46 (twice) with Ronaldo in three seasons at Old Trafford. “Cristiano always played out wide most games and I was on the other side out wide.
“This is different with Robin. We dovetail well and try and help each other score goals. I have seen things said over the summer, but me and Robin are friends off the pitch. There is no problem between me and Robin at all. We are great friends and we want to help each other and be successful.”
Michael Carrick knows the value of the pair as he added: “Wayne and Robin are two unbelievable players. I think that was as good as I have seen Wayne in a while - he was sharp and hungry.”
Ominously, both Rooney and van Persie were also on target in last season’s 3-2 win at City and Carrick added: “We have good memories from last season. It will be intense. These games can be won and lost on fine details. Last year was a deflected free-kick [from van Persie], but you take that and we want a win again this time.”
