Super Cup Preview: Asante Kotoko set to revenge FA Cup defeat to Medeama

The Porcupine Warriors are going into today’s off-season clash with an aim of settling scores with the Mauves and Yellows who denied them a treble last season

Nathaniel Asamoah to face his old club as Medeama SC gear up to upset Asante Kotoko in the Super Cup on Sunday.

The Porcupine Warriors and the Mauves and Yellows - winners of the domestic top flight and the FA Cup respectively - will lock horns to earn the bragging rights as the best-of-the-best on the local scene at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium as a curtain-raiser to the 2013-14 league season.

This year’s Super Cup will lack the intensity of recent years aided by the fact that all attention was shifted towards Ghana's crucial encounter against Zambia at the same venue on Friday, but do not expect either team to take it lightly with Kotoko looking to exert revenge on the Tarkwa-based club who inflicted a painful 1-0 win over them in the FA Cup finals.

The FA Cup holders have played second fiddle to the league champions since joining the elite division of Ghana football. Fourteen competitive games have been played between the two with Medeama managing to muster a paltry two wins against the two-time African champions, three draws and nine loses.

Nonetheless both teams come into this game full of confidence after the two completed a rather successful pre-season exercises. Yusif Aziz, Kotoko's main man upfront going into Sunday’s game is in ominous form for Didi Dramani's side scoring seven goals in eight outings in pre-season.

New head coach of Medeama Hans Van der Pylum will be handed his first competitive game on Sunday and believes his side has the arsenals to edge out the Porcupines at their own backyard.

Both teams are buoyed to pick up the first silverware of the season - an epic encounter awaits football lovers.
