Newcastle United vs Chelsea
The Blues went into this match with the opportunity to go temporarily top of the league with rivals Arsenal and Liverpool clashing later on in the day, whereas for Newcastle they were looking to try and bounce back from derby defeat to Sunderland.
Chelsea came close to opening the scoring in the 13th minute when John Terry saw his header rebound off the crossbar seconds before Branislav Ivanovic’s shot also hit the woodwork. The visitors had no luck in the first half as Terry was thwarted this time by Davide Santon who cleared his header off the line.
Newcastle had a few chances of their own in the half but were unable to beat Petr Cech and at the end of the first half it was 0-0. The second half was dominated by the hosts and they eventually managed to beat Cech who had been in inspired form in the 67th minute when Yoan Gouffran headed home from Yohan Cabaye’s free-kick.
Chelsea pushed for an equaliser but it was not to be for Mourinho’s side as Loic Remy secured the points for Alan Pardew’s team with a stung effort that left Cech with no chance. The Magpies managed to hang onto the result and their 2-0 victory moves them up to ninth while Chelsea are now second.
Arsenal vs Liverpool
The Gunners went into this game looking to bounce back from two consecutive home defeats and had the opportunity to go five points clear at the top of the Premier League with a win, while their visitors were looking to go top themselves.
It was a frenetic start to the first half and the Gunners managed to win the battle and took the lead through Santi Cazorla in the 19th minute when he scored after his initial header hit the post.
Liverpool could have had an equaliser when they took a free-kick but the referee had yet to book Bacary Sagna so he called them back to retake it. Both sides spent the rest of the half in search of a goal with both sides coming close but at half time Arsenal lead 1-0.
It was a similar start to the second half but the Gunners again came out on top and they doubled their advantage when Aaron Ramsey scored a sublime goal from the edge of the box to beat Simon Mignolet. Liverpool tried to get back into the came but ultimately failed to do so. Arsenal managed to hang onto the lead and this result sends them five points clear at the top while Liverpool are now third.
Manchester City vs Norwich City
Man City were looking to reconfirm their title credentials following a disappointing away loss to Chelsea while the Canaries wanted to move out of the relegation zone.
The big news going into this match was the selection of Costel Pantilimon but the Romanian was hardly needed as City dominated proceedings eventually taking the lead in the 17th minute when Sergio Aguero’s shot was deflected in over the hapless John Ruddy.
Things went from bad to worse for Norwich as three minutes later David Silva doubled City’s lead with a shot that Ruddy will be feeling he probably should have saved. The match was taken out of Norwich’s hands when Matija Nastasic made it 3-0 from a corner but Ruddy was again left wanting as the shot had its pace taken off it from a deflection making it easier to catch.
Pellegrini’s side compounded their visitors misery in the 36th minute when Alvaro Negredo made it 4-0, but Chris Hughton will be far from happy with the awarding of this goal as Aguero was offside when he received the ball to set up Negredo. Nonetheless the sides went in at half time with the score at 4-0.
It got even worse for Norwich in the second half as Yaya Toure scored a fantastic free-kick on the hour mark that left Ruddy with no chance. It began to get embarrassing for Norwich at this point as Aguero made it 6-0 with 20 minutes remaining. City showed no mercy as Edin Dzeko scored a seventh in the 86th minute.
There was to be no further damage for Norwich but this defeat means they they remain 18th but for City this fantastic victory moves them up fourth.
Fulham vs Manchester United
Fulham went into this match trying to distance themselves from the bottom three and the Champions were looking for back to back victories in an effort to close the gap at the top.
The home side were lacking in form going into the match and this showed in how easy it was for United who took the lead in the ninth minute through Antonio Valencia. The visitors doubled their advantage on 20 minutes when Robin van Persie scored and the match was effectively won for the Red Devils when Wayne Rooney made it 3-0 two minutes later.
Fulham managed not to concede any more in the first half and they went into the interval three goals down. The home side managed to get themselves back into the game in the 62nd minute when Alexander Kacaniklic saw his shot deflect off Rooney and into the United goal.
There was to be no comeback for Martin Jol’s side as they ended up losing 3-1 and they now sit in 15th while United remain eighth.
Stoke City vs Southampton
The Potters wanted to move away from the dreaded bottom three with a victory and their opponents were looking to continue their fantastic start to the season which had seen them concede only three goals.
Stoke started this match in the best way possible with keeper Asmir Begovic scoring straight from a kick-out after just 12 seconds to but his side 1-0 up. Stoke looked like they might make it to half-time with the lead but the Saints managed to level just before the break through Jay Rodriguez meaning it was 1-1 at half-time.
Neither side managed to take the lead in a hard-fought second half and the game finished 1-1 leaving the sides 16th and fifth.
Hull City vs Sunderland
Hull were looking to cement their position in mid table going into this match while the Black Cats were hoping to build on their derby victory over Newcastle as they attempt to climb out of the bottom three.
This started off as an even encounter and Hull managed to take the lead through a Carlos Cuellar own-goal in the 24th minute. It looked as though that would be as bad as it got for Sunderland in the first half but then they got two player sent off within minutes of each other with Lee Cattermole and Andrea Dossena getting straight reds.
It looked as thought Poyet’s side were doomed to defeat as they entered half-time a goal and two men down. Sunderland managed to not concede again in the second half which is pretty impressive with nine men and Hull are now 10th while Sunderland are still 19th.
West Ham United vs Aston Villa
Both sides in this match had enjoyed a reasonably good start to their season but both wanted to get three points that would move them further from the relegation zone into the comforts of mid-table.
West Ham were the better side in the first half of this match and had it not been for Brad Guzan’s heroics in goals they would have found themselves leading at half time but as it was after 45 minutes this match was goalless.
Both sides tries to break the deadlock in the second half but they were fruitless in their attempts as the game finished 0-0, leaving the pair in 13th and 14th.
West Bromwich Albion vs Crystal Palace
West Brom have enjoyed an alright start to the season as they went into this match in 12th which is a huge contrast to their visitors who only have three premier league points to show for their efforts this season and look condemned to relegation.
Palace had played reasonably well in the first half and looked as though they might make it to half-time level at 0-0 but Saido Berahino managed to put the Baggies into the lead in the 44th minute to make it 1-0 at half-time.
Albion secured the points late on when Gareth McAuley made it 2-0 from a corner in the 83rd minute. Palace failed to get back into the game and remain rooted to the bottom while West Brom are now 11th.
