Arsenal performed a smash-and-grab at Borussia Dortmund as Aaron Ramsey's goal was enough to separate the sides in a game dominated by the home side.
Arsene Wenger's men had not registered a single shot before the Welshman popped up to head home his 11th of the season after Olivier Giroud had knocked down Mesut Ozil's in-swinging cross from the right-hand side.
The goal kick-started a flurry of activity in the Dortmund penalty area.
Ramsey could - and perhaps should - have made it two just minutes later when he latched on to a cross from Giroud before firing straight at goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller from 10 yards.
From the resulting corner, Giroud poked goalwards from the penalty spot only to see the ball cleared off the line by Marcel Schmelzer.
Dortmund will feel aggrieved having had the better of the match for much of the 94 minutes. Henrik Mkhitaryan was guilty of missing the hosts' best chance after he fired wide when through on goal.
The defeat is Dortmund's first at home this season - and the first time an English side has ever won at the Westfalenstadion.
