Chelsea didn't give me a chance, says Liverpool star

Sturridge is playing in his preferred position 

Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge believes he never got the opportunity to show what he could do at Chelsea.

The former-Stamford Bridge attacker was sold for £12m in the previous January transfer window after 13 goals in 63 appearances over four years.

But since he joined Liverpool, the England international has been in red-hot form, bagging 18 goals in 23 appearances.

Speaking to Sport magazine, as reported by talkSPORT, Sturridge said: "When I went to Bolton [on loan], I was able to show what I can do because I was playing as a centre-forward.

"At Chelsea, I never got the chance to do that, and I've got that opportunity here [at Liverpool].

"I'm just playing the position that I enjoy playing in."

Sturridge played on the right of a front three for Chelsea, first under Carlo Ancelotti and then under Andre Villas-Boas.

But he was allowed to leave Stamford Bridge last January for Liverpool, and the Anfield frontman credits his form in front of goal to the belief shown in him by Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers.

Asked if the presence of Rodgers at Liverpool helped convince him to join the Reds, Sturridge said: "It did, yeah, because I knew about him from when I was at Chelsea, and the players who were there spoke highly of him.

"He had tried to get me on loan when he was at Swansea, so I knew he rated me. He knows how I work.

"He knows what I need. I needed to be believed in, to play as a centre-forward at a club. I didn't get that at Chelsea, and Brendan gave me the opportunity to do that here."

The 23-year-old is currently the top scorer in the Premier League with eight goals from the first nine games.
