Ghana Football Association President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has dismissed rumours making the rounds that the FA intends to hire the services of an expatriate to strengthen the Black Stars technical bench for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Mr Nyantakyi did not only express surprise at such a rumour but also found as “ridiculous” the suggestion that 62-year-old German coach Klaus Toppmöller could become the team’s Technical Advisor at the World Cup, as neither the GFA nor the Black Stars Management Committee had discussed such an issue.
“I would say it is ridiculous because there is no such plan. I wonder why such a rumour would pop up at a time when every effort is being geared towards the second leg of the play off against Egypt next month,” Mr Nyantakyi told Graphic Sports in an interview yesterday.
In the aftermath of the Black Stars emphatic 6-1 win over Egypt in the first leg of their playoff tie, there has been news making the rounds that with the 2014 World Cup ticket almost secured, the GFA plans to secure t]he services of a foreign coach, with the name of former Bayer Leverkusen and Hamburg SV coach, Toppmöller, coming up strongly.
Toppmöller, a former Germany international, was among the names that came up four years ago when the GFA decided to headhunt for a coach for the national but he settled for a job with the Georgian national team where he worked from 2006 to 2008.
While the GFA boss admitted that an elaborate plan would be rolled out to ensure that Appiah’s team replicated their previous World Cup performances at the Brazil 2014 event, hiring an expatriate was not on the drawing board.
“We don’t want to jump the gun. We want to qualify first and that is our primary focus now. Once qualification is secured, we would plan for the World Cup and we will be guided by what happened in our previous experiences.
“We believe in Kwasi Appiah that is why he was given the job. We promised him our unflinching support for him to succeed and we still stand by that promis
