Clubs are dying - Bechem United President laments
The president of Bechem United, Kingsley Owusu-Achau, has expressed worry about the lack of serious sponsorship for the Premier League this season, suggesting that the situation is weighing heavily on the smaller clubs.
He said running Premier League clubs in the country had become a herculean task, with most of them unable to keep their heads above water as gate proceeds had proven too small to sustain them.
Owusu-Achau, fondly called Dr Agamah by close pals, told Graphic Sports in an interview that the smaller clubs were feeling the pinch even more because they were unable to attract any sponsorship, and had to rely solely on individuals to pay players.
“It’s been a big challenge to us as new-comers since we are not able to attract sponsorship, and we have to do everything on our own. From salaries to medical bills to transportation, everything is being borne by one person, and it is a very difficult task.”
He posited that until corporate bodies intervened by way of sponsorship, the quality of the league could further plummet as talents would seek greener pastures elsewhere.
He attributed the extinction of clubs such as Kessben FC to the lack of sponsorship, and believed if corporate institutions channelled part of their funds into the development of football, it could create jobs for the many talents who otherwise would have been roaming the streets as miscreants.
The estate developer said he had been able to sustain Bechem United this far because he channelled the little profit he accrued from the business into the team due to the love he had for sports and his people back at Bechem. Nonetheless, he was emphatic that the long term benefits of such investment were enormous to both the country and the individual.
