Ghana Premier League Results: 29th Sept.
Hearts bounce back to survive Inter Allies scare. Hearts of Oak brushed aside their 'Super Clash' defeat to return to winning ways with a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Inter Allies on Sunday in Tema.
The Phobians who lost Kotoko in their previous game at home were under pressure to deliver and they did that through the hard way.
A first-half brace by Winfred Cobbinah handed the Phobians a two-nil lead before Gabriel Hotor pulled a goal back for the Ghana Premier League debutants.
The Phobians restored their two-nil lead through new signing Selasie Adjei.
The home side fought back to reduce the tally and almost got the equaliser with Hearts of Oak surviving a late scare.
The victory takes them amongst the top-four of the three-week old campaign.
Kotoko march on to claim third-straight win
An injury time winner from the spot handed Asante Kotoko all three points in the Ghana Premier League as they defeated New Edubiase 1-0 on Sunday.
Kwabena Adusei stepped up to convert a penalty in the 92nd minute for the Porcupine Warriors on their return to the Baba Yara Stadium after completing a three-game home ban from the previous season.
The win, their third-straight victory keeps them top of the log and helps them to maintain their hundred percent start to the season.
Edubiase, who entered the game on the back of two consecutive losses were close to picking a point off the champions but rather conceded the late penalty which blew their chances.
Medeama still in search of first win
Medeama’s winless run continued at the Golden City Park where they drew 1-1 with Berekum Chelsea on Sunday in the Ghana Premier League.
And it was not a happy return for Hans Van Der Plyum, who was keen on a win as the Dutch coach now with Medeama returned to the grounds of his former employers.
Godbless Asamoah equalized for Medeama after Dennis Tetteh had put Chelsea in front.
Though it’s a point earned against a strong Chelsea side, it extended Medeama’s run of draws to three in the three-week old competition.
Der Plyum, who is waiting for his first win has now seen his side pick just three points from a possible nine points.
Adjei’s overhead kick gives AshantiGold win
AshantiGold kept up pace at the top of the Ghana Premier League after moving second following a home victory over Wa All Stars on Sunday.
Francis Adjei gave the Miners a 1-0 victory at the Len Clay Stadium.
Wa All Stars, who claimed a famous win in Obuasi last season, were undone in the 33rd minute when Adjei scored the game's only goal from an over-head kick which proved to be the winner.
The win will be a sweet for goalkeeper Robert Dabuo and Tijani Joshua, who both swapped the Blues for the Miners as they played a big part ensuring that AshantiGold picked all three points.
Lions roar to home win over Amidaus
It was a first win in the Ghana Premier League on Sunday for Heart of Lions who defeated Amidaus Professionals 2-1 in Kpando.
A brace by Nana Egyiry helped Lions to the important victory.
Lions raced into the lead courtesy Egyiry’s double before Daniel Awuni pulled a goal back from the spot after Amidaus won a penalty.
Amidaus, who made an impression in their premiership debut last season are yet to win a match this season.
In Bechem, Ebusua Dwarfs were stunned by the newly promoted side who finished 1-0 winners.
The win was Bechem's first of the season.
And at the Accra Sports Stadium, a Daniel Kordie goal gave Liberty Professionals a 1-0 victory over King Faisal.
Liberty Professionals pip King Faisal in Accra
A second half strike from Daniel Kodie was all Liberty Professionals needed to grab their first win of the campaign.
It was disappointing that it had to occur at an almost empty stadium. One could count just over 200 fans in the 45,00 capacity stadium, with the only densely populated zone being the VIP area.
The first half saw play characterized by safe passing – both teams possessing the ball well around the middle but with no real sense of attacking initiative. King Faisal possessed well, but seemed to lack ideas going forward.
It was Liberty that looked the more dangerous side, the more likely to score. And they had the half’s only two chances too.
Enterprising right back Anthony Nimo smashed a short from long range that rattled King Faisal goalie Ibrahim Iddrisu’s upright on 33 minutes, with Tamimu Muntari – scorer of this season’s first ever goal – coming close with a well curled free kick that Idrissu tipped over the bar a minute to half.
The Dansoman-based boys came in strong in the second half – grabbing the first chance four minutes in. Midfielder Abubakar Latif lashed a short from 25 yards just wide after some patient build up play.
King Faisal would have their first chance three minutes later – captain Tetteh Nortey shooting into the arms on Liberty goalie Kwaku Stephen.
Play was even from then on, with the trend reverting back to harmless possession play. Until out of the blue, a goal was scored. It occurred so fast Liberty themselves could not believe their luck. Goal scorer Daniel Kodieh was already at the corner flag, leading a celebratory dance with his teammates.
The goal had occurred on the 66th minute mark via a loose ball that had dropped to Kodie just on the edge of the 18-yard box, which he struck with the right dose of power and direction beyond the reach of Faisal goalie Iddrisu whose stretch wasn’t enough to stop the ball.
King Faisal took over control of the game, trying hard to crack a rock hard Liberty defence led by skipper Alfred Nelson. Coach Carlos Roberto Paulette threw in three attackers, in a bid to beef up attack and introduce more urgency towards grabbing an equalizer.
But try as they did, their glaring lack of creativity sabotaged their efforts to come back into the game. Converting their beautiful passing game into an attacking threat seemed a difficulty, costing them the game in the end. They lacked that instinctive defense splitting passer, or that brilliant dribbler who would take the bull by the horns by taking defenders on.
Liberty themselves had a similar problem. But they were lucky to have taken one chance to secure all three points. It was a first home victory over King Faisal since 2010.
King Faisal will have to wait another week at least to experience that kind of relief.
