The legendary manager was at Kilbryde Hospice in his native Scotland to help dig the first square mile for foundations of a new wing.
The hospice is a palliative care centre for patients suffering with serious illnesses such as cancer and sits next to Hairmyres Hospital.
Ace of spades: Sir Alex Ferguson helped dig the first square metre fora new wing at Kilbryde Hospice
The new hospice will take 12 months to build and will allow for an expansion of the existing day hospice and care at home services already offered by Kilbryde Hospice, as well the introduction of a new 12 bed in patient facility.
Ferguson has helped prominent Glasgow businessman James Mortimer, of Lynnet Leisure Group, to raise funds for the Donna Mortimer Ballantyne Charitable Trust which was set up after James’s daughter Donna lost her brave battle to skin cancer.
All proceeds from the Trust will be donated to the new wing at Kilbryde Hospice which is situated adjacent to Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride.
Dennis Gallagher, Kilbryde Hospice chairman, said: 'It is a fantastic benefit to the hospice to have such a public figure like Sir Alex take the time out of his busy schedule to come and give us support.
'It lets people see the importance of this project to the people of South Lanarkshire, the fact that someone like Sir Alex can support us.
Digging deep: Ferguson was keeping busy despite a first season away from Manchester United in 26 years
'He has actually been a local resident in the past, in East Kilbride, so he is a man that does remember his past and where he has come from. He has been supportive of the hospice for many years.
'It has taken us 10 years to get the money to build this and it will take a year to complete.
'We now need to fund the operational activities of the hospice and that could stretch to anything up to £2m.'
Ferguson will be watching with interest as United hope to get their start of season back on track after a defeat by bitter rivals Liverpool before the international break.
