Barcelona have made Manchester United andArsenal target Ilkay Gundogan their prime candidate to replace Xavi, according to theDaily Express.
The Premier League duo were linked with a summer move for the Dortmund midfielder, and now it appears Barcelona have entered the race.
The player has failed to reach an agreement over a new contract with the Bundesliga giants, adding to speculation he may be in line for a January move.
And reports in Spain suggest Barcelona are ready to make a move for the 23-year-old.
According to AS, Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta travelled to Germany last week to discuss the possibility of Gundogan making the switch to the Nou Camp.
The paper suggests the Catalan giants see the German as the ideal replacement for Xavi, who at 33 is entering the latter stages of his career at the Nou Camp.
At 23-years-of-age, Gundogan represents the perfect balance of youth and experience, having already won eight caps for the German national side, and played an integral part in the Borussia Dortmund side that reached last season’s Champions League final.
Borussia Dortmund are set to demand around £25million for the midfielder, meaning that a bidding war between Barcelona, Manchester United and Arsenal may be about to get underway.
