Mourinho had his heart set on replacing Ferguson.
A Chelsea source claims that manager Jose Mourinho is still hurting from being overlooked for the Manchester United job this season, according to Sports Direct News.
The Blues boss had been linked as one of the two main contenders to replace the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson following his surprise retirement at the end of last season, though the position eventually went to David Moyes.
The Scot cannot boast the same level of achievement on his CV as Mourinho, who has won league titles with Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid, as well as two Champions League trophies in his glittering career.
Moyes, meanwhile, is greatly admired for his work with Everton, though he failed to ever lead the Merseyside outfit to silverware in his eleven years at Goodison Park.
Mourinho instead rejoined his old side Chelsea this summer, though it is claimed that he really had his heart set on taking the job at Manchester United, and is still hurting from the rejection for a position he was confident of landing.
A club insider is quoted as saying: “I wouldn’t say Jose thought the United job was in the bag but he was pretty confident. You can tell by the way he told TV cameras after the Real-United Champions League tie that the best team [United] had lost the game. How often do you hear him say that? He is still hurting over not getting the job.”
Mourinho’s Chelsea side are currently second in the Premier League, while United are languishing in 8th place after an uncertain start under Moyes
