Ghana Premier League Preview: Hearts aim for Kotoko's spot in Bechem

Hearts of Oak are in Bechem on Match Day Five of the Ghana Premier League this weekend. The Phobians face newly promoted Bechem United, barely 72 hours after beating another newly promoted side, Hasaacas 2-1 in Accra.

Bechem United have been the surprise package thus far this season – not only remaining unbeaten in their opening four fixtures (two wins and two draws), but also becoming the fifth team ever to win at the dreaded Agyemang Badu Park in Dormaa against Aduana.

The added twist is that in two previous meetings with Hearts, Bechem are unbeaten. Both meeting, in the 2011/12 season, ended goalless.

Coach Miroslav Bogdanovic’s men are now 4th on the league log, while their fellow newcomers Hasaacas and Inter Allies are wallowing in the relegation zone after a difficult first few fixtures (14th and 16th respectively).

Hearts, unbeaten away this season, will be motivated; a win will move them up to joint top with arch rivals Kotoko (on 12 points) ahead of Sunday’s fixtures. They are unbeaten in their last six league games on the road, including three consecutive wins in their last three.

Coach David Duncan’s charges go into the game as the league’s current scorers (with seven goals) aiming to carry on their form in front of goal, though it will be at a ground that is yet to witness an opposition goal in over 180 minutes. Bechem United are also are unbeaten in their last nine home league games (including from their spell in the league during the 2011/12 season), recording five wins and four draws.

The game, to be officiated by referee S.B Bortey, will be live on the official league broadcaster of the league, SuperSport at 15.15 GMT.

On Sunday when the seven games will be played across the country, champions and leaders, Kotoko will make the trip to the Tema Stadium face basement boys, Inter Allies.

The Porcupine Warriors have made a hundred percent start to the season while their opponents, who are making their league debut have lost all four matches so far.

Elsewhere on Sunday afternoon, the battle between two recent former league champions will be on live on SuperSport when struggling Berekum Chelsea and Aduana Stars clash at the Golden City Park.

Medeama are another big side in need of a lift. Winless after four matches and having picked up just 3 points from a possible 12 points, the Mauves will be put to test at the Accra Stadium when they arrive for their meeting with Liberty Professionals.

In Kpando, Heart of Lions will be hoping to extend their good start when they take on Ebusua Dwarfs while Hasaacas will attempt to put behind their midweek loss to Hearts of Oak when they play New Edubiase at the Essipon Stadium.

AshantiGold will battle Amidaus Professionals at the Len Clay Stadium.

And in Kumasi, King Faisal will lock horns with Wa All Stars at the Baba Yara Stadium to round a busy weekend of top-flight action.
