Rodgers Says Arsenal Were Never Going To Sign Suarez

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has baited Arsenal ahead of their Premier League clash on Saturday by saying that their proposed move for Luis Suarez in the summer had no chance of happening.

Arsenal battled hard to sign Suarez after the Uruguayan international made it clear he wanted to leave Liverpool but saw an offer of £40million and one pound rejected.

Suarez has since done a u-turn on his decision and finds himself back in the Liverpool first team after his suspension, netting six goals in four Premier League matches, although there are still rumours of a move to Real Madrid in the future.

With Liverpool just two points behind leaders Arsenal, the pair will battle it out on Saturday as both clubs aim to be top of the Premier League by the end of gameweek 10.

Rodgers said there was no chance of Suarez joining Arsene Wenger’s men this summer and praised the owners for standing firm, Sky Sports report.

"I understand why Arsenal would want to buy a player of Luis' quality because he is one of the leading strikers in the world but it was something that was never going to happen," said Rodgers ahead of the trip to the Emirates Stadium.

"For us and the institution we are we certainly weren't going to sell to a rival, a competitor, and that was something which was very strong from the off.

"There was all sorts of gossip on the summer but we were very firm in our leadership, from the top right the way through, that this was something we didn't want to do.

"It was a great credit to the owners and the leadership of the club that they stood by what my thoughts were as a manager and they backed it all the way."
